Putnam, a leading expert on social capital, highlights the need for a renewal of social connectedness and civic engagement in his book Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American Community. The Harvard professor’s research findings showed that civic engagement leads to happier, healthier, longer lives. Social capital provides value to communities through building the social fabric with trust and connectedness. Interaction between corporate and community partners through The Rix Center will build on Putnam’s findings that civic engagement is beneficial to the health of individuals and communities.
